Me
I was born in Annapolis, Maryland,
and lived there until moving to Oxford, Mississippi, in
1995.
I attended Ole Miss and received my Bachelor of Arts in English
in 1999. After graduating I spent about a year traveling
and
working. I was accepted in the Mississippi Teacher Corps,
a program that paid me to earn a Masters Degree in Curriculum
Instruction, while teaching for two years in a low income
public school in Mississippi. During these two years I taught
9th and 11th grade social studies in Marshall County. My
interest in childbirth began during my senior year of college
when
I became very close friends with a woman who was pregnant
with her first child and chose to have a homebirth (Stevi
Woolworth and her beautiful family may be seen on the picture
page). At the time I had no idea that women still had
homebirths. Although the idea was foreign, I had a lot
of
confidence in Stevi's judgment. Her birth was the most amazing
experience I had ever encountered. After her second child
and encouragement from other friends(thank you Taylor), I
began to pursue the field more seriously. I am now attending
births, assisting a traditional homebirth midwife(Norma Clark's
webpage is under birthpartners on the link
page), and working on my certifications. My "day
job" is at a child abuse prevention center in Oxford,
Mississippi. There I coordinate two programs. One is
called
the "To Love A Child" program which is a 16 week
course for pregnant teens, with a mentor for a year, and
a
teen mom support group after the course is over and they
have had their babies. The other is called "COPES" which
is an 8 week course for teen offenders that teaches anger
management, life skills, ang drug and alcohol awareness.
On October 19, 2002, I was married to Brad Hayden. We live
in
Water Valley, Mississippi, with our cats Charlie and Maurice.
